School links and partnerships

why they are a great resource and how to make the best of them

Why link or partner with another school?

Students can benefit greatly with a link partner or school based globally or in another part of the country, giving them a chance to speak to people from a different background, and ask questions about their environment.  Both students and teachers become exposed to a different way of learning and teaching, which can help them all look at their own perceptions.

A broadening of the curriculum will naturally occur once communication is established with your new link, it may take some work, but it will be worth it for all involved.

Communication links with school around the world

Where to start

It might feel like an overwhelming task when you sit down to start finding another school to link with, but there are a few things to take into consideration before you jump in: –

  • Where should the link/partner school be located – does this matter, can it tie in with a specific part of your students learning, or maybe your local community has links to another country.
  • How will we find the link/partner school – do you have any existing links?  Maybe someone you trained with is now working abroad or in another part of the country.
  • What is the best way to communicate with the link/partner school once found – video conferencing is a great way to do this, and is included in Rocket Unified Communications solutions, this can be combined with e-mails, or good old fashioned post!
Here are a few links to websites that might help you find your perfect link/partner school: –
  • Global Dimension – this has some great resources regarding global education.
  • British Council – an organisation with great values.
  • Edugeek – this is actually an Education IT forum, but it has many people on it that you can reach out to.
  • Google – this may be an obvious one, but just search for a school in an area, an example could be searching for “school in Chicago”, Google will list all the schools in the Chicago area with links to their website and their phone numbers – then reach out to them, via phone or e-mail, and its a great idea to then have a chat via 3CX webmeeting.

Communicating with your link school

Your initial discussions with any potential link/partner school may just be via e-mail, it is of course a very quick and handy way to communicate.  However, it can be impersonal, and often hard to get across your tone (excited hopefully!)  Maybe the next step is to phone them, however that can often cost, a great way to avoid the cost and issues with e-mail is to simply video conference them with 3CX webmeeting.

Webmeeting comes with Rocket UC’s solutions, at no extra cost as its an industry leading video conferencing system.  It’s very easy to use, and there is no need for the person at the other end (or you) to download anything at all, it’s just based right in your Chrome or Firefox browser that most computers have installed already.

It takes one click to instantly start a webmeeting, from there you can easily e-mail an invite over to your new colleagues and get things going right away.
